Grounding and its Benefits

Did you know that sinking your toes into the ground, sand, or wet grass brings a whole slew of benefits? Yes, it does! This is called “grounding” or “earthing” and it’s an excellent way for us to not only reacquaint ourselves with the magic of nature but to heal our bodies inside and out.

By grounding, you are basically reconnecting with the earth by interacting with its electromagnetic force. That, in turn, corrects your body’s conductive electrical system.

And we need all that healing now more than ever, especially since grounding is so accessible! Throughout the world, more and more people have had to live with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, stress, and fatigue. That puts us on a loop and thus we stop feeling centered and rooted.

How exactly does one reestablish a connection with the earth? For one, you can try going barefoot for about half an hour outside, in your yard, on your front lawn, or at the beach. Try sitting and standing still! Make it a daily thing! Simply by making direct contact to the earth, you are already grounding.

If you don’t have the time to go to the beach or your yard due to work, school, or a disability, you can do it right at home! There are many grounding materials like earthing floor and chair mats, bed pads, body bands, and even body patches to choose from.

By grounding, you are directly connecting with the earth and thus get healed directly, as well. Here are some benefits that will hopefully convince you to get grounding in no time:

1. It improves stress, pain management, and sleep.

Sleep is important to us if we want to keep functioning properly on a day-to-day basis- sadly, too many people don’t get enough of it! Grounding actually helps your body by normalizing cortisol, the stress hormone, by shifting your body’s nervous system mode from the “fight-or-flight” mode to the “rest-and-digest” one. And with better sleep comes better pain management and significantly reduced stress

2. It boosts your circulation.

When you do grounding, it boosts your circulation and in turn, that improves the delivery of oxygen and all types of nutrients to all the many tissues found in your body. A half-hour of grounding has actually been shown to improve facial blood flow.

3. It helps with inflammation.

Did you know that our ancestors barely experienced inflammation because their bodies were so in touch with the earth? Inflammation can be a chronic thing for a lot of people and it stems from your body’s unchecked reactive oxygen called free radicals. By grounding, your body takes in negatively-charged antioxidant electrons straight from the earth, neutralizing positive free radicals.

4. It improves your blood and lowers risk of heart attacks.

A study done by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary medicine shows that “grounding increases the surface charge on red blood cells and thereby reduces blood viscosity and clumping. Grounding appears to be one of the simplest and yet most profound interventions for helping reduce cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events.”
